About Our School

Northeastern Middle School is located in the northeast sector of Wayne County in Indiana, five miles north of Richmond. It is an agricultural area comprised of five small communities-Fountain City, Williamsburg, Whitewater, Bethel, and Webster-with approximately 5,800 total residents. The school enrolls approximately 350 students in grades 6 through 8. Average class size at Northeastern Middle School is approximately 25 students per classroom teacher.

Northeastern Middle School is accredited by AdvancED and has received a Grade A from the Indiana Department of Education for three consecutive years (2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018). In addition, the Indiana Department of Education recognized NMS in July 2016 as one of two hundred "Promising Practice" schools in the state for the use of Twitter with stakeholders. NMS received STEM-certification from the Indiana Department of Education during the 2017-2018 school year. 

School achievement is supported by the following certified staff: 1 administrator, 1 dean of students, 15 general education teachers and 1 special education teacher. The support staff includes 2 teaching assistants (special education and Title I), 1 secretary, and 1 guidance counselor. The following staff members are shared with Northeastern High School: 1 athletic director, 1 school psychologist, 1 registrar, 1 nurse, 1 treasurer, 1 attendance/suspension supervisor, music (band & choir) teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and bus drivers.

Northeastern Middle School operates on a seven period day with a homeroom period daily. Enrichment for high ability students and remediation labs are provided for identified students. Project Lead the Way courses are offered at all three grade levels in computer science, engineering, and biomedical fields. Required electives include digital citizenship for grade 6 and exploring college and careers for grade 8.

Student growth is formally reported to parents each nine weeks. Parent/teacher conferences may be scheduled upon request by either parents or teachers at any time. Provisions are made for students who experience difficulty in reading and math through participation in the Response to Intervention (RTI) program.

Students are encouraged to participate in many school activities including: Student Council, Spell Bowl, Academic Team, National Junior Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), Drama, and competitive sports.
