About Our School District

About Our School District . . . . .

The Northeastern Wayne School Corporation is located in the northeastern sector of Wayne County. It is an agricultural area comprised of five small communities with a number of small businesses, but no industry. The school district encompasses approximately seventy square miles and has a population of approximately 5,800.

Fountain City, Whitewater, Williamsburg and Webster originally had their own schools. Northeastern Jr.Sr. HIgh School opened its doors in the fall of 1967. The last consolidation took place in 1983 when Northeastern Elementary School opened in August of that year. Both facilities are located on the same campus six miles north of Richmond on U.S. 27.

Northeastern Wayne Schools' central office staff includes a superintendent, assistant superintendent, treasurer, secretary, nurse, food service director and maintenance/transportation director. Northeastern Elementary School personnel include two administrators,  31 1/2 faculty members, a social worker, two office staff, six instructional assistants, a Latchkey assistant, three custodial staff and eight cafeteria staff members. Northeastern Middle/ High School personnel includes tthree administrators, a certified staff of 34 teachers, two guidance counselors, an athletic director, two secretaries, one bookkeepers, one and one-half teaching assistants, three custodians and twelve cafeteria workers. Special Education needs for both buildings are met through East Central Special Services, which provides two full-time MIMH teachers, four Learning Disabilities teachers, a Speech/Language pathologist and three instructional assistants.

Northeastern Elementary is offering full day kindergarten.  One of the major goals for the primary classes is to have all students reading at grade level by the end of the second grade. A Literacy Group program has been developed in kindergarten through second grade with tremendous success.  The sixth grade departmentalizes English, Math, Social Studies and Science to better prepare students for their middle school experience.

Northeastern Elementary provides Music, Art, Computer, Physcial Education, and Media to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Band is provided for interested fifth and sixth grade students. A gifted/talented enrichment program is available for qualified students in fourth through sixth grade. Three Reading Recovery teachers address the needs of the lowest achieving first graders. Additional provisions are made for students exhibiting low scores in reading and math through participation in the Title 1 and Remediation programs.

Northeastern Jr. Sr. High School's seventh and eighth grade classes are clustered together in a main area of the building which incorporates a middle school philosophy. This "school within a school" concept helps students make the transition from self-contained elementary classrooms to the structure of the high schoolenvironment. The high school academic and vocational needs are met through a variety of means: a traditional comprehensive curriculum; English and U.S. History advanced placement classes; distance-learning opportunities; I.C.E. (Inter-disciplinary Cooperative Education) a mentoring/work program; cosmetology training at Demuth Institute of Cosmetology; training at Ivy Tech for certified nursing assistant and medical records; vocational training through Richmond vocational School; articulated or dual credit from Ivy Tech or Vincennes University for selected courses.

Northeastern Middle/ High School provides remediation for those students in need before, during or after school. A gifted/talented enrichment program is provided for qualified students through twelfth grade. Numerous extra-curricular activities such as athletics, clubs and theater are available throuout the year to interested students.
